The Switch’s reign as one of Nintendo’s most successful video game consoles continues: the hybrid handheld recently set a record as the Big N’s longest-running console, surpassing the previous record set by the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) without being replaced, according to new data.
The Switch has now lasted 2,688 days (or more than seven years) without being replaced by a next-gen console. As mentioned, the NES held the record at 2,686 days before its successor (the Super Nintendo Entertainment System) came along to replace it.
While anticipation for the next-gen Switch remains high, there’s still no concrete release date for Nintendo’s Switch successor. That said, many are predicting we’ll get a formal announcement of some sort in late 2024 or early 2025.
Recently, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that The company plans to combat scalpers by producing enough Switch units to meet demand. He also noted that the semiconductor shortage issues from a while back were no longer an issue, meaning Nintendo can make more consoles this time around.
