Tablets are back: Global shipments up 22.1% in Q2 2024


In the second quarter of 2024, the global tablet market experienced a strong recovery. Data from International Data Corporation (IDC) shows that total shipments grew by 22.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching 34.4 million units. This growth is due to the launch of new products, increased competition and a growing preference for portable computing devices.

Apple remains the market leader with 12.3 million units sold, an increase of 18.2% over the previous year. The new 11- and 13-inch screens Ipad air and iPad Pro Models played a major role in this success, especially outside China, where Apple faces stiff competition from local brands.

Samsung ranked second with 6.9 million units sold, up 18.6% from a year earlier. Although Samsung did not launch any innovative products this quarter, effective business strategies and a favorable comparison with the previous year helped boost its performance.

Lenovo ranked third, with 2.5 million units shipped and a 16.7% increase over last year. Notably, Lenovo’s detachable tablet segment outperformed its overall tablet business, with a remarkable growth rate of 39.7% compared to 11.7% for regular tablets.

Huawei ranked fourth with 2.3 million units sold, showing a significant growth of 40.3%. The successful launch of the MatePad 11.5S and targeted online promotions in China during June contributed to this impressive performance.

Xiaomi rounded out the top five with explosive growth of 94.7%, shipping 2 million units. Xiaomi’s strong performance in the Chinese domestic market and the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan), as well as its expanded market share in European countries such as Russia, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, were key factors.

The recovery of the global tablet market underscores the enduring appeal of these devices for productivity, entertainment and education. With increasing competition and technological advancements on the horizon, consumers can expect even more choice and features in the near future.
