‘Space Cadet’ Interview: Emma Roberts and Tom Hopper

MovieFone I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Emma Roberts and Tom Hopper about their work on ‘Space Cadet’, their first reaction to the script, their characters’ relationship, singing karaoke together on screen, and working with director Liz W. Garcia.

Moviefone: To start, Emma, ​​can you tell us about your first reaction to the script and what it was like playing a character who has such a positive attitude?

Emma Roberts: I love the script for ‘Space Cadet’. I read it and immediately fell head over heels in love with the character of Rex, and it was fun to play someone so upbeat and optimistic and also a little exhausting.

MF: Was it emotionally draining playing a character as optimistic as Rex?

Emergencies: I mean, a little, but it was also fun. I’ve been doing a lot of much darker things over the last few years, so it was fun to play someone who I felt the audience would connect with and feel uplifted and inspired, because I feel like we’ve all been through a lot these past few years. So to make a movie where there’s no real darkness, it’s really light and fun and something you can watch with your family and friends and siblings and not be embarrassed to be watching it with them, was fun.

MF: Tom, what was your first reaction to the script and your approach to playing Logan?

Tom Hopper: The first reaction was that it is very funny. I read a lot of scripts and there are very few that make me laugh and think at the same time, and also have a character that is compelling and that I would have fun playing. So that was my first reaction, and certainly one I took in wanting to have a meeting with Liz Garcia. Then, in terms of Logan, to me, someone like Logan is an example of what I think a lot of people end up doing, which is becoming their job. They identify themselves solely by their work and not who they really are as a person, and they fit that mold. That’s what happened to Logan. I think he follows the rules. Then, I think there is a more human side and a funnier side to Logan that is then brought out by Rex and that is why he is so attracted to her, but he is also afraid of her, because she represents what he is closest to. . down and pushed. So he’s fighting against that to bring him back to life, which I think is a lovely message of the movie that the character of Logan brings, is that we should all try to do that from time to time.

MF: Emma, ​​how would you describe Rex’s friendship with Nadine?

Emergencies: We were channeling our ‘Romy and Michele‘. I loved that duo. I remember when Poppy and I were walking into our high school reunion and saying, “It’s ‘Romy and Michele.'” We had to do it. It is one of my favorite movies.

MF: Emma, ​​can you talk about Rex’s relationship with Logan, what she sees in him, and what it was like for you to work with Tom?

Emergencies: Tom Hopper is a literal joy. He is the real Rex. He comes to work every day and is the happiest guy ever and cheers everyone up. But it was a lot of fun and I loved Rex and Logan’s relationship because it’s obviously very unlikely and I especially love their karaoke scene together. I think people are going to love it because I know when counting crows Come on, I’m losing my mind. So, I think people will love that little souvenir that they offer.

MF: Tom, how would you describe Logan and Rex’s relationship, why he is attracted to her, and what was it like for you to work with Emma?

TH: I think it is an unusual match. But like I say, deep down, they’re probably more similar than they think. But I had a great time working with Emma. I think from what was on the page to what it became, I think I’m very pleased with the result. Emma was a great scene partner. She brought the game of her A every day and is so full of life. She comes to life on set and on screen, and is very easy to work with.

MF: Was it fun filming the karaoke scene and singing “Mr. Jones” from Counting Crows with Emma on screen?

TH: Yes. We started rehearsing it an hour after I landed in New Jersey. We went and rehearsed that right away, along with two other songs, because we didn’t know what song it was going to be at the time, because they were still figuring out the rights to the song. But when it turned out, I was glad it was that song, because it was my favorite of the three. But yes, it was an experience. We just dove headfirst together and it was a lot of fun. It was a good way to get to know each other pretty quickly.

MF: Finally, Tom, what was your experience collaborating with director Liz W. García on set?

TH: Liz is wonderful as a director. She is very collaborative. From the first meeting I had with her I knew we were going to get along well. Her mannerisms and energy were perfect for this movie. Plus, she’s also the writer, right? So when it came to suggesting things on set, she had complete freedom to be able to move things around and say, “Oh, say this or say that.” For me, I love that. When a director is just going to get his hands dirty, he comes along and you collaborate and say, “Oh, what if I did this?” or “What happens if I do that?” I think that’s when the comedy is particularly great, because you just play and you get this kind of synergy with the director. She’s great at that. She is amazing. Without a doubt, it is always very useful to have the writer as a director. Sometimes you have that leeway with a director who is not the writer, because she has been given free rein on the script to move it that day. They don’t have to go consult with the writer. But it’s always surprising when it’s a writer/director. They are not married to his words and are very open to you making suggestions and making them happen. So if you’re totally okay with that, then it’s a perfect match. Brilliant.
