Justice League: Deadly is one of the most infamous cancelled projects in the entire superhero world, being canceled right at the starting line due to the 2007 strikes and ending what could have been the start of a new DC Universe. Santiago Cabrera, who was cast to play Aquaman in the film, reflects on his experience with the project before it was cancelled.
“Technically, I was Aquaman in 2007 when the writers strike happened,” Cabrera explained in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter“Just before I went to Australia, I was with George Miller, I’m a big fan of his, I think he’s phenomenal. And I had a bit of communication with him. My friend Tom Burke, who was fantastic at FuriousWhich I loved, he was like, ‘Hi, George says hi.’ It was like he was asking me, would you like to be a superhero?
“The strike took place, so they put Justice League: Deadly “On hold. But, just being in his world, I went to Wētā, Peter Jackson’s special effects company, where I tried on the suit. So it felt very real for a second. But at the same time, it was like: Don’t do this stuff. In this business, until it’s all out there, until you’re at the premiere and you’re talking about it like I’m talking about it right now, it’s never real.”
Upon learning that Santiago Cabrera was already putting on the Aquaman suit to prepare for Justice League: Deadly It’s enough to bring tears to any DC fan’s eyes. While it’s a shame the project never saw the light of day, it did leave the door open for dozens of interesting DC projects to be released in the early 2010s before the next attempt at a DC Universe with Iron Man.
Could Santiago Cabrera return to the DC Universe?
Although Justice League: Deadly came to a premature end, it seems fans aren’t ready to give up on Santiago Cabrera’s dream as Aquaman. While Cabrera didn’t outright say he’d like to play the Defender of the Deep again, he did mention that he’d be open to playing a different role in the DC Universe.
“Clearly, I was excited about that,” Cabrera continued when speaking on Justice League: Deadly“So if something were to happen again, why not? I would love to delve into villain territory, I think I would enjoy it.”
Given Santiago Cabrera’s history of playing good characters, like Aquaman in Justice League: Deadly and Isaac Mendez in HeroesIt would be interesting to see him take on the role of a villain in the new DC Universe.
