To see this, just look at the list of 30 films below, selected from hundreds (even thousands in some cases!) of half-star reviews on Mailbox for some of the most beloved films in cinema history. (Half a star is the lowest possible rating on Letterboxd, by the way; there’s no zero-star option.)
As you browse through these 30 reviews, you’ll notice that I’ve crossed out the names of these Letterboxd users. This is because I don’t want you to run off and yell at the people who wrote these reviews. That’s not what this is about. Don’t yell at anyone. (The Internet as a whole could benefit from 6000 percent less yelling at anyone and everyone.) Every single person on this list (and every single person on Letterboxd) No on this list) is entitled to his or her opinions, no matter how different they may be from the majority.
That’s part of the pleasure of Letterboxd, and of film criticism in general. There are There are many movies that many people like. that I’m not particularly excited aboutand vice versa. (Don’t yell at me either, please.) We all bring our own attitudes and experiences to movies, and our tastes are a reflection of that. Maybe that’s why I find it so fascinating to seek out and read reviews of low-rated canonical classics. And here are 30 of the most interesting, or the funniest, or the weirdest reviews I’ve come across.
