What is the movie ‘It Ends With Us’ about? (Spoiler alert!)

Ends with us is an adaptation of the 2016 novel of the same name. The novel is by Colleen Hoover. The screenplay is by Christy Hall.

The stars of the film Blake Lively Like the main character, Lily Bloom. Initially, the story seems romantic, but Lily falls in love with Ryle Kincaid and the two get along from the first moment.

In addition to spoilers, beware of graphic depictions of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Every abuser has a sad story, some genuine and some made up. In Ryle’s case, he accidentally shot and killed his brother as a child. Now, as an adult, he has outbursts of intense rage, goes into abusive fits, and directs his explosive violence toward his wife.

One particularly horrifying moment is when Ryle invades Lily’s privacy, rifling through her journals. This is extremely common behavior in abusive partners (and abusive parents, ex-partners, and the like). In this case, her childhood journals mention her platonic friend, Atlas Corrigan, and he becomes convinced that she is having an affair.

Ryle’s abuse escalates. He sexually assaults her and, when she tries to fight back, he headbutts her so hard that she is knocked unconscious.

‘It Ends With Us’ depicts an all-too-realistic nightmare

Lily manages to escape from Ryle and calls Atlas to rescue her. Atlas takes her to the hospital, where Lily discovers that she is pregnant with her abuser’s child.

It’s understandable that Lily doesn’t want to raise her son in an abusive home. That’s how he grew up.

However, she ultimately decides to stay with Ryle during the last months of her pregnancy. She tells Atlas about Ryle’s abuse of her, which he already suspected. And, after giving birth to her daughter, she files for divorce from the monster so that her daughter does not have to grow up in the same house. Later, upon co-parenting with Ryle, she and Atlas express their desire to form a relationship as adults.

Why is ‘It Ends With Us’ controversial?

Any story about domestic abuse is going to generate controversy. Not all experiences are the same. Some survivors will have had it worse (always, always, someone has had it worse). Others may think the abuser is too understanding, or less understanding than the abusers they have experienced.

Many book readers don’t understand why Lily allowed Ryle to stay in her life for so long. Critics say they would have ended the relationship as soon as he pushed her away, or at least as soon as he pushed her down the stairs.

Also, there is controversy over Lily’s decision to allow Ryle to co-parent her daughter. Obviously, an abuser is an abuser. Even if he never directs his violent anger towards Emmy (which is a big problem), Yeah), you will surely witness this when you date again.

Why did the author make these decisions?

Unfortunately, in the book and the movie, Ends with usThe ending is painfully realistic for millions of domestic violence survivors.

Abusers often target people who have been abused in the past. That’s realistic, and it’s what Ryle does in the book and the movie. Although Lily resented her parents for their abusive marriage, it clearly paved the way for Ryle to try to convince her that his treatment of her was somehow normal or acceptable.

Colleen Hoover, who was inspired by her father’s abuse of her mother when writing Ends with usI understood that clearly. Abusers are manipulative people and survivors can still make strange decisions. It is always good to remember that fictional stories are not guides for how real people should behave. This is not a moralizing work.

Is there a film drama ‘It Ends With Us’?

There seems to be a lot of drama going on behind the scenes. Ends with usOne of the lead actors (Justin Baldoni) is also the director, but he seems to be at odds with much of the cast. Or… maybe fans of Twitter and Instagram is just giving it too much importance.

Whatever is going on, people are comparing this press tour to the Don’t worry darling debacle.

Can’t we all enjoy a Blake Lively movie? Well, given the subject matter, “enjoy” might not be the right word. But early reviews say the strength of the performances is one of the film’s successes.
