‘Cobra Kai’, ‘Love Island’ and ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ boost streaming ratings


Strike first and strike hard, for real. NetflixCobra Kai” and the Peacock one “Love Island, United States“Headed the Luminar originals streaming TV series lists for the period July 19-25. As for movies, Netflix’s new romantic comedy “Find Me Falling” and the revived “Hillbilly Elegy” led the ranking.

The sixth-season debut of “Cobra Kai” generated 1.1 billion viewing minutes in the show’s first full week of availability, following the July 18 premiere of the first half of its final season. The July 21 season finale of the relationship reality show “Love Island” propelled that show to 1 billion viewing minutes, down only slightly from the previous week’s 1.1 billion viewing minutes.

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” also had a strong moment thanks to its Season 4 finale that premiered July 18. The superhero spoof ended with 431.6 million minutes watched. The Season 1 conclusion of Apple TV+’s David E. Kelley drama “Presumed Innocent” pushed that show to the top of the charts with 424.1 million minutes watched.

Netflix Asia’s drama “Master of the House” was a blockbuster hit on the TV series chart with 271.2 million minutes watched in its first full week of availability. So was Netflix’s documentary series “Simone Biles: Rising,” which certainly grabbed attention given the start of the Summer Olympics in Paris this week, where the star gymnast will compete.

Among streaming originals, the most-watched was “Find Me Falling,” with 634.3 million minutes watched and about 8 million total views. The romantic comedy, directed by Stellana Kliris, stars Harry Connick Jr. and Agni Scott.

Second place went to “Hillbilly Elegy,” the 2020 drama based on the memoirs of Donald Trump’s Republican running mate JD Vance. The Ron Howard-directed film, which earned Glenn Close an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress, generated 573.8 million viewing minutes and 4.9 million views.

Disney+’s “Descendents: The Rise of Red” held up well in its second full week of release, landing at No. 3 with 299.1 million minutes watched and 3.3 million views. Last week, the latest installment of Disney’s “Descendents” franchise soared to No. 1 with 1.1 billion minutes watched.

“Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black” also fared well, with 165.2 million minutes watched and ranked No. 6 in its second week with 1.5 million views. Indian film “Maharaj” appeared in the top 10 nearly a month after its June 21 release, with 152.3 million minutes watched and 1.2 million views.
