Animated series 'Smallville' receives a disappointing update from Tom Welling

Small town is one of the most beloved DC shows of all time. For many, Tom Welling is the definitive version of Superman. And in a world where almost every actor gets a second chance at their most iconic roles, many fans were hoping that this might mean the series would return in some form. These hopes were confirmed in 2021, when it was revealed that Welling and co-star Michael Rosenbaum were working on an animated remake of the hit teen drama.

Despite all this seemingly good news, not everything is positive in Smallville. Tom Welling received an update on the DC series during a recent chat with Krypton SiteWhile the actor revealed that more work had gone into the revival than initially believed, he also admitted that not much could be shared due to Warner Bros. Discovery withholding the green light for the animated project.

“We’ve been talking about it for a few years,” Welling explained. “We want to do a Small town comics and animated series, and then we would all give voice to the characters. We already have an artist and a poster.”

“We haven’t been able to share it yet, but Lionel Luthor looms over everyone, and it’s really cool, but we just can’t do anything without DC saying we can do it. They just haven’t given us the green light, but we’re ready, and Al [Gough] and miles [Millar]who wrote Small town, We want to write it, but it is not our property until we are told we can do so.”

“It would be more of a labor of love. It's not going to make a billion dollars, so the studio is kind of… [grumbles]Maybe we can do a campaign, not a GoFundMe campaign, because that's financial, but a kind of petition. We can ask Warner Bros. to let us do it.”

It's certainly disappointing to hear this, especially considering how passionate Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum have been about a Small town However, with Warner Bros. Discovery focused on building its own DC Universe, an animated continuation of a previous series probably isn't at the top of its priority list. Though given that the project already has some work done, it may be a matter of “when,” not “if.”
