How has ‘Inside Out 2’ performed at the box office?
Pixar’s new sequel exceeded expectations (Disney projected close to $90 million), with $155 million in its opening weekend, the highest opening since ‘Barbie‘ last summer (Greta GerwigThe film opened with $162 million.
Unadjusted for inflation, that marks the second-highest domestic opening for an animated film (behind the ‘incredibles 2‘ in 2018) and put it far beyond the first ‘Inside out‘, which opened with 90 million dollars.
The new film, which earned good scores from critics and audiences, also did well overseas, grossing $140 million, enough to surpass ‘Frozen II‘ ($135 million and yes, another Disney effort) as the biggest animated overseas release of all time.
Worldwide, the film began its run with $295 million.
What is the story of ‘Inside Out 2’?
The film is a continuation of the original by revisiting the emotions in Riley’s (Kensington Tallman) head. We’re back with Joy (Amy Pohler), Sadness (felix smith), Fear (Tony Halereplacing Bill Hader), Anger (Luis Negro) and disgust (Liza Lapirareplacing Mindy Kaling), who have adapted well by guiding and reacting to their teenager’s life.
But one night they are rudely awakened by the puberty alarm, and further disturbed by a work crew arriving to demolish the control center, preparing to rebuild it to accommodate some new emotions, including anxiety (maya falcon), Shame (Pablo Walter Hauser), Envy (Ayo Edebiri) and boredom (Adèle Exarchopoulos).
Soon, new emotions take over Riley’s life as she faces new challenges and worries, while the original team is repressed to the back of her mind. Can they come back to figure out how to balance things?

Will there be ‘Inside Out 3’?
Unlike the ending of ‘Inside Out,’ which hinted at the possibility of an additional story –– the idea of Riley’s character reaching puberty, which was actually revisited here–– the post-credits sequence of ‘Inside Out’ 2′ is largely dedicated to revisiting a joke from the middle of the film.
Of course, there’s plenty of material to cover in other stages of Riley’s life, but few of it seems particularly family-friendly. Still, with the huge success of this new film, it is expected that Disney bosses will at least ask Team Pixar to explore options.
What’s next for the summer movie season?
Obviously, this is a reason to hope that audiences will finally embrace cinema again and, with any luck, films like ‘Deadpool and Wolverine‘and the new’Despicable Me 4‘will keep the money truck rolling.
