Today’s Mark Gurman report for Bloomberg reveals some details about the AI-powered iOS 18 features we’ll see during the WWDC Keynote on Monday. The tech giant is bringing all the features under the umbrella of “Apple Intelligence,” which is a clever use of the acronym AI.
Apple’s main focus will be on productivity and helping with daily tasks, so AI will be integrated into many of Apple’s system apps. For example, AI can generate web page summaries in Safari or provide full responses in Messages and Mail. The latter will also use an AI-powered algorithm to sort emails and make your inbox much tidier. And Messages will offer notification summaries.
The Photo app will have some advanced editing tools, including Apple’s version of the Smart Eraser tool in Google’s Photos app.
Big improvements are also planned for Siri and Xcode for code compilation, but these features will likely be released publicly next year.
However, Apple will not be entirely serious or fun. Generative AI will generate emojis on the fly, depending on what you’re typing. Users will then be able to use emojis that are beyond the Unicode consortium emoji list.
Apple will reportedly rely on cloud and on-device computing for some of its AI features. Gurman also confirms The participation of OpenAI in some of the artificial intelligence tools of iOS 18.
However, cloud computing can mean a breach of privacy. That’s why Apple is addressing the problem in multiple ways. It will use a confidential computing design for data processing, will not create user profiles based on customer data, and will inform the user of how the data will be used.
