I’ve been covering and testing AI tools for ZDNET since before AI reached its current level of popularity. Some of the tools stood out and impressed me so much that I found it hard to stop using them. As a result, I’ve incorporated several of these tools into different aspects of my daily workflow.
These are my favorite AI tools, the ones I use almost every day. Interestingly, only one of these life hack technologies is a AI Chatbot.
1. Grammatically
Grammatically has been around for quite some time and artificial intelligence has always been an integral part of its services. The platform is known for its ability to check spelling, grammar, conciseness, and more in everyday texts, and for good reason: it is reliable and useful.

My favorite way to use the tool is by activating the Grammarly for Chrome Extension so that AI can work with me in the background to catch any mistakes I may have missed. This is especially useful when writing on the go, such as when composing a quick email.
I studied journalism in college and now write several stories daily for work. As a result, I’m pretty confident in my ability to avoid most grammatical errors and write quality content. However, sometimes when I’m writing a quick email or message, I miss small details—that’s where Grammarly can polish my work.
In addition to basic grammar assistance, the tool can offer more advanced help, thanks to its integration of generative AI features that provide shortcuts to your daily tasks.
For example, you can use Grammarly to create or rewrite text, brainstorm ideas, identify gaps in your writing, change the tone of your text, generate quick responses, make outlines, and more. You can even select a voice, which includes formality and tone options, to help you compose messages for different platforms, such as LinkedIn or email.
While I don’t use the writing or rewriting features in my own workflow, I can see the value of implementing them into other people’s everyday writing processes.
2. ChatGPT

While ChatGPT was undoubtedly impressive when it was first launched, it had some major drawbacks, including a knowledge limit and an older GPT model. I use the tool primarily as a more conversational search engine. If I have a question about any topic, I turn to ChatGPT instead of Google because instead of filtering through hundreds of results like I would by following a Google query, I get a simple, conversational answer that addresses my question directly.
When ChatGPT has to search the web for an answer, it even includes the sources the chatbot got its answer from. This allows me to verify the information provided and learn more about the topic, making it a great tool for research or completing a work project.

ChatGPT can help you correct grammar, rewrite texts with errors, and write messages, proposals, or other content from scratch. Although I don’t use these features in my work or in my articles, I find them incredibly useful when writing personal correspondence.
Perhaps one of the most valuable new features allows users to upload screenshots, photos, and documents. PDF files often contain a lot of information that can be difficult to digest; now, you can upload them to ChatGPT and have it answer your question about the document, generate summaries, or even create content based on them.

As a journalist covering the rapidly evolving world of AI, I often have to read new research, including many articles in academic journals. After reading the entirety of a study, I use ChatGPT’s summary to confirm my findings and ask further questions about points that are still unclear to me.
Another valuable advantage of ChatGPT is its ability to help with writing code, Generate Excel formulas, Creating graphs and tablesand more. While I don’t need to use these features at work and haven’t tried them, I know several professionals who use them regularly.
3. Canva Pro
Canvas It has almost every AI tool you can imagine for graphic design, including its own AI image generator. However, if you create visual content on a daily basis like I do, you probably don’t need to generate images that often. Instead, you need tools that make it easier and faster to create social media posts, invitations, flyers, and presentations, and that’s where Canva Pro shines.
Canva Pro features an impressive array of graphic design tools, including Magic Edit, Magic Design, Magic Eraser, Background Remover, and more. These features complete a wide range of tasks and automate almost all of your visual design needs.

My favorite tool, which I use almost daily, is Canva’s AI Background Remover. Sounds basic? Sure, but if you’ve ever had to isolate an element in a photo, you know how tedious the process can be with Photoshop or how much some automated tools can mess up this task.

As a journalist, I conduct a lot of interviews as part of my daily workflow. It can be time-consuming to review audio recordings of these interviews (which can be as short as 15 minutes or as long as an hour and a half) and then type out the conversations word-for-word or note down the timestamps of sections that caught my attention. With Otter.ai, I can simply upload the audio file and have the transcript generated in seconds.
I’ve used other transcription services in the past, but Otter.ai stands out for its accuracy and efficiency. If a section of the transcript doesn’t look right, you can listen to the audio and edit the text with a single click.
Another useful perk is the chatbot that accompanies each transcript. You can chat with “Otter” and ask him questions about the transcript, which is very helpful for those times when you remember the gist of what someone said but not the exact words.
