- Marvel wants them for an untitled 2026 effort and 2020’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’7.

It’s been a few years of ups and downs for Wonderfulboth in general and in particular regarding plans for the company’s next two giant films under the name ‘Avengers‘ banner.
The new films, which are still going through a complicated development process, will reunite several characters (both old and new) to face gigantic threats. And they will be compared to blockbuster movies (think $4 billion combined).Avengers: Infinity War‘ and ‘Avengers Endgame‘.
So who is Marvel looking to recruit to take on that daunting challenge? How about the directors of, say, Infinity War and Endgame?

What’s Happening With The New ‘Avengers’ Movies So Far?

To say the road to new ‘Avengers’ movies has been bumpy is like saying the ocean might be a little wet.
Originally announced as part of a big reveal by the studio boss. Kevin Feige in it San Diego Comic-Con 2022 On the future developments of the “phase”, the new films were called ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty‘ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘.
“The Kang Dynasty” has been the real sticking point here. Although the plan had presumably been to set up a confrontation with Jonathan Mayores‘multiversal villain, Majors was cut by Marvel following accusations (and later conviction) of harassment.
While ‘Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton He boarded the film shortly after it was announced, He has since moved away. ‘Deadpool and Wolverine‘s Shawn Levy He has reportedly since been offered the job, but reports about the Russos’ possible input mean he has apparently turned down the idea.
And as for the writing, veteran Marvel writer Michael Waldroncreator of the ‘Loki‘ series, was the latest person hired to work on the script for the currently untitled film, likely so Marvel can find a new approach.

‘Secret Wars’ has been more of a mystery in the cinematic world.
What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars’?

‘Secret Wars’ would be inspired (through the usual Marvel movie filter where changes will be made) by a pair of comic book series from the ’80s centered on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, which in the first installment pitted Marvel heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.
In a 2015 reissue of Jonathan HickmanThe resulting conflict left the multiverse collapsed and the survivors living on a single planet ruled by classic villain Doctor Doom. We’ll have to wait and see if that actually happens, though some of Hickman’s on-screen adventures have been referenced in ‘Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness‘.
The Russos have already spoken of their enthusiasm for ‘Secret Wars’, so you can certainly see the appeal. We’d be surprised if they didn’t look into collaborating with the duo again. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeelywho wrote most of his previous Marvel output.

What have the Russo brothers worked on since ‘Endgame’?

Since their time at Marvel, the pair have become powerhouse producers, backing artists such as Main video‘s’Citadel‘ series and Netflix‘s Chris Hemsworth-action film franchise starring ‘Extraction‘. They also helped with shepherding. Oscar Winner’Everything everywhere, everything at once‘.
And on the management front, the brothers did Apple movie ‘Cherry‘starring Tom Holland (who is no stranger to the Russos’ work) and Netflix’s action thriller ‘The gray man‘, starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling.
Netflix has a sci-fi series coming soon.The electrical state‘, which finished filming last year and is currently in post-production. It should be available later this year.
The directors had talked more about the world of ‘The Gray Man,’ but if they risk returning to Marvel, that will remain strictly on the back burner (unless they give another movie to someone else).
When will the next two ‘Avengers’ movies hit theaters?
Marvel plans to release the first one (still untitled at the time of writing) in theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by ‘Secret Wars’ on May 7, 2027.
A safe pair of hands, then, but clearly a pair Marvel hopes will return.
